Body Scan Meditation

A body scan is a mindfulness practice where you slowly move your attention through each part of your body, noticing sensations without trying to change them. It is one of the core practices of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and a wonderful way to release tension you didn't know you were carrying.

  1. Settle in. Let your eyes close or rest your gaze softly downward.
  2. Notice the weight of your body being supported beneath you.
  3. Bring your attention to the top of your head. Just notice what is there.
  4. Soften your forehead, the space between your eyebrows, your eyes.
  5. Let your jaw unclench. Let your tongue rest.
  6. Feel your neck and throat. Let them lengthen and soften.
  7. Let your shoulders melt down away from your ears.
  8. Move down your arms to your hands. Notice any warmth or tingling.
  9. Feel your chest rise and fall with each breath.
  10. Soften your belly. There is nothing to hold in.
  11. Notice your lower back. Breathe into any tightness.
  12. Feel your hips and the weight of your legs.
  13. Move down through your knees, calves and ankles.
  14. Rest your attention on your feet, all the way to your toes.
  15. Now feel your whole body at once, breathing, alive, at ease.
