Calm Breathing
Calm breathing pairs a comfortable inhale with a short pause and a slow exhale. Making the out-breath longer than the in-breath is one of the simplest ways to nudge your body toward its rest-and-digest mode, and this ratio is gentle enough for anyone to start with.
How to do calm breathing
- Sit or lie down comfortably and let your shoulders drop.
- Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4, letting your belly rise.
- Hold the breath softly for 4. Keep your face and jaw relaxed.
- Breathe out slowly through your nose or softly parted lips for 6.
- Repeat for 3 to 10 minutes, following the orb as it grows and shrinks.
Benefits
- Slows your breathing to a relaxed pace
- The longer exhale helps quiet a racing mind
- Easy for beginners and kids
When to use it
Any time you want to reset: before a meeting, after a stressful message, or at the start of a meditation.
Questions
How long should I practice calm breathing?
Start with 3 to 5 minutes. One cycle takes 14 seconds, so 5 minutes is about 21 breaths. With practice, 10 to 20 minutes a day gives the deepest effect.
Is calm breathing safe?
For most people, yes. Breathe gently and never strain. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, return to normal breathing. If you are pregnant or have a heart or lung condition, check with your doctor before practicing breath holds.
Can I do calm breathing with music?
Yes. Relax guides calm breathing with an animated orb and optional soft tones or voice cues, and pairs it with 100 free calming tracks and nature sounds like rain and ocean waves.
