Coherent Breathing
Coherent breathing, sometimes called resonant or resonance-frequency breathing, slows you to roughly five and a half breaths per minute with no holds. Research on heart rate variability suggests this pace lets your heart rhythm and breath fall into sync, which many people feel as a calm, alert balance.
How to do coherent breathing
- Sit comfortably and breathe through your nose.
- Inhale smoothly for 5.5 seconds, filling from the belly up.
- Without pausing at the top, exhale smoothly for 5.5 seconds.
- Keep the breath soft and quiet, never forced.
- Practice for 10 to 20 minutes for the fullest effect.
Benefits
- Associated with higher heart rate variability
- Calming without feeling sleepy
- A great daily practice to build resilience
When to use it
As a daily 10 to 20 minute practice, or during focused work when you want calm energy.
Questions
How long should I practice coherent breathing?
Start with 3 to 5 minutes. One cycle takes 11 seconds, so 5 minutes is about 27 breaths. With practice, 10 to 20 minutes a day gives the deepest effect.
Is coherent breathing safe?
For most people, yes. Breathe gently and never strain. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, return to normal breathing. If you are pregnant or have a heart or lung condition, check with your doctor before practicing breath holds.
Can I do coherent breathing with music?
Yes. Relax guides coherent breathing with an animated orb and optional soft tones or voice cues, and pairs it with 100 free calming tracks and nature sounds like rain and ocean waves.
